Former England captain Michael Vaughan has stressed the necessity of including out-out-favour England batsman Kevin Pietersen in the line-up for the Poms? upcoming 4-match Test series against India, claiming the team will need its best players in order to have a chance at beating India on the slow, spinning surfaces.
?They [the venues in India] are all low, slow spinning wickets and I wouldn't want to go there without my best players,? said Vaughan in a conversation with BBC 5 live. ?I would want Kevin Pietersen batting at four. I don't think England have ever had a player like him. He's exceptional.?
Pietersen has been ruled out of selection for the national team?s ongoing and upcoming fixtures, owing to a prolonged stand-off with the England and Wales Cricket Board. While talks have been initiated between both parties, the issue has not reached a satisfactory resolution, owing to which Pietersen was not named in the squad for the India tour. The 32-year-old has since gone on to express his disappointment at being excluded, and voiced the hope that he will be able to make it back into the squad in time for the series against New Zealand next year.
Justin Langer, Australia?s batting coach, has backed Glenn Maxwell to make it to the national Test team, claiming the young all-rounder has the attitude and technique required to make it to the top.
?...he's got a very, very good technique,? Langer pointed out. ?He's going to be a good player. I love his attitude. I hope he gets six hundreds to really push his name up (for Tests).?
Maxwell received his first national call-up for Australia?s limited-overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, played during August/September this year. He impressed with composed performances, including an unbeaten 56 in the final ODI of the 3-match series ? outings which saw him being selected for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012. Despite having made a name for himself in the limited-overs formats of the game, the 23-year-old (with 770 runs and one century from 11 first-class games to his credit) has expressed the desire to put in some impressive first-class performances, in order to earn a Test debut.
England?s wicketkeeper batsman Craig Kieswetter has stressed on the need for the team?s batsmen to adopt a more ?street-wise? approach, as they look to tackle spin bowling effectively during the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012.
?You've got to be more streetwise, be prepared to score ugly runs,? stressed Kieswetter, following the team?s shocking 90-run defeat at the hands of India on September 23. ?We've got to be adaptable to the wickets.?
England conceded their worst T20I defeat yet ? a 90-run loss ? to India after the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh (4/12) and Piyush Chawla (2/13) completely demolished their batting order. Craig Kieswetter? 35 was the top score of the day for the Poms, and they were all out at 80 ? the lowest total they have ever registered in the format. However, having already qualified for the Super Eights stage of the tournament, England will be moving on regardless, although the lesson in playing spin should serve them well as they gear up for their next match, against the West Indies, where they will be tackling mystery spinner Sunil Narine.
