Beloved New Zealand author Margaret Mahy dies

(AP) ? Beloved New Zealand children's author Margaret Mahy has died.

She was 76.

Mahy was a prolific author, writing more than 120 books that were translated into 15 languages. Among her well-known works are "A Lion in the Meadow," "The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate," and "Bubble Trouble."

She won the Carnegie Medal twice and in 2006 won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for her lifetime contribution to children's literature. She was one of 20 living people to hold her country's highest honor, the Order of New Zealand.

She died Monday after being diagnosed with cancer.

Prime Minister John Key said in a statement that Mahy was "widely acknowledged as one of this country's finest authors, and one of the world's greatest writers of children's and young adults' stories."
