It's Time to Get Online ? Sharecare.com Blog

If you?re on the fence about building your online presence, it?s time to hop off and join the conversation. Primary care pediatrician Claire McCarthy, MD, recently blogged about the importance of doctors interacting online. Dr. McCarthy, who was named one of SharecareNow?s Top 10 Online Influencers in Children?s Health, is an avid blogger and a senior pediatrics editor for Harvard Health Publications. When it comes to the online space, McCarthy says, ?It has become increasingly clear to me that I need to be there?and that more doctors need to be there with me.?

She makes a good case about the online opportunities?and obligations?for medical professionals. Here are a few of McCarthy?s reasons for being active on the Web:

1. Patients are online.
The number of social media users continues to grow. There are more than 550 million daily active users on Facebook alone, according to the site?s most recent statistics. When patients get sick, they turn to their social networks and Google for answers. McCarthy said she often hears patients say, ?I looked it up online.? If the Internet is becoming a key resource for patients, then doctors should be part of it.

2. You don?t have to blog to have an impact.
Creating an online presence isn?t solely about writing content. Doctors can find and share useful information, or comment on worthwhile health topics. Sharecare hosts Twitter and Facebook chats that allow experts to connect directly with an engaged audience on topics from prostate cancer to plastic surgery to women?s health and fitness.

?As doctors, we have so much to bring to the conversation?and so much to gain,? says McCarthy.

3. Online interactions can complement a doctor?s office visit.
There?s a lot doctors want to say, do and teach patients during appointments, but time is limited. The online space is another medium to communicate with patients. Of course social media forums are not the place to give specific medical advice, but medical professionals can share information with patients to guide them in making health decisions.

Sharecare is a great place for you to start. You can create an online profile and participate in Sharecare?s interactive, social Q&A platform to help consumers live their healthiest life today!

Love Triangle? Ciara Refuses To Drop A Dime - Madame Noire

Ciara

WENN

From Necole Bitchie

Ciara was spotted fresh faced while making her way through LAX Airport earlier this week, just hours after she wrapped up an interview on Power 106.

Earlier that day, she sat down with Big Boy?s Neighborhood to promote her upcoming album but Big Boy had other things on his agenda to talk about.? He grilled her on her former relationship with 50 Cent and why they were no longer together.? He also wanted to know a few key things like whether or not Chelsea Handler was the reason that she and 50 broke up and whether the story Chelsea told on Howard Stern about Ciara stalking 50 Cent had any truth.

Ocean Acidification Can Mess with a Fish's Mind

In more acidic waters clown fish wander too far from safety, sea snails fail to avoid prey

Monterey, Calif.?Mental problems at sea? Fish and mollusks could begin to have them?thanks to rising CO2 levels. Some of the resulting behaviors are odd, some compromising, and they reveal just how fundamentally carbon emissions are affecting our increasingly fragile Earth.

As humans emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, more of the gas is absorbed by the oceans, gradually making the water more acidic. Numerous studies in recent years have documented how lower pH (higher acidity) can make it harder for shellfish and tiny organisms to form shells or internal skeletons and to reproduce. The acidity often forces the organisms to expend extra energy to counteract ill effects on their metabolisms as well. But now scientists are finding that lower pH can also mess with ocean animals' minds.

Small clown fish (yes, Nemo), for example, normally stay extremely close to the coral in which they spend their entire lives. But as the water becomes increasingly acidic?as in various recent experiments?they tend to wander farther and farther from home. This uncharacteristic "boldness" is not necessarily a good trait because the farther they swim, the more likely they are to get eaten by predators. Greater acidity also "impairs their ability to discriminate between the smell of kin and not, and of predators and not," according Philip Munday, a professor and research fellow at the Coral Reef Studies center at James Cook University in Australia, who conducted the experiments and presented results at a symposium here this week called The Ocean in a High-CO2 World.

Other species exhibit equally unusual behaviors. A snail known as Chilean abalone, which adheres to rocks along wave-swept shores, quickly rights and reattaches itself when it is dislodged, an important skill for avoiding predators. But when CO2 levels were raised by about 50 percent, some snails were slow to right themselves and others did not do so at all. "Their decision-making is delayed," said Patricio Manriquez, a researcher at the Southern University of Chile. Some snails took wrong turns in trying to avoid crab predators, and some even turned into the crab's claws instead of away from them.

In experiments done at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute here, hermit crabs living in highly acidic conditions did not show the increased boldness of Munday's clown fish, but they took far longer to withdraw into their shells than normal when they came under attack from a potential predator (in this case, a toy octopus).

Researchers are not sure what is causing the peculiar behaviors but Munday suspects that elevated CO2 levels interfere with a neurotransmitter called GABA, which plays a key role in modulating activity in the brain and nervous system of virtually all animals, including humans. In one experiment, Munday exposed reef fish to high CO2, which interfered with their sense of smell. He then administered a compound that helps to facilitate activity by receptors that sit on nerve cells and direct the cells' responses to GABA, and the abnormality was reversed. Because GABA is so ubiquitous, Munday fears that ocean acidification could cause sensory and behavioral problems for many sea creatures if global CO2 levels continue to rise.

Vaughan pushes for Pietersen's inclusion in England's tour of India ...

Vaughan pushes for Pietersen?s inclusion in England?s tour of India ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part 2 ? September 25, 2012

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has stressed the necessity of including out-out-favour England batsman Kevin Pietersen in the line-up for the Poms? upcoming 4-match Test series against India, claiming the team will need its best players in order to have a chance at beating India on the slow, spinning surfaces.

?They [the venues in India] are all low, slow spinning wickets and I wouldn't want to go there without my best players,? said Vaughan in a conversation with BBC 5 live. ?I would want Kevin Pietersen batting at four. I don't think England have ever had a player like him. He's exceptional.?

Pietersen has been ruled out of selection for the national team?s ongoing and upcoming fixtures, owing to a prolonged stand-off with the England and Wales Cricket Board. While talks have been initiated between both parties, the issue has not reached a satisfactory resolution, owing to which Pietersen was not named in the squad for the India tour. The 32-year-old has since gone on to express his disappointment at being excluded, and voiced the hope that he will be able to make it back into the squad in time for the series against New Zealand next year.

Justin Langer, Australia?s batting coach, has backed Glenn Maxwell to make it to the national Test team, claiming the young all-rounder has the attitude and technique required to make it to the top.

?...he's got a very, very good technique,? Langer pointed out. ?He's going to be a good player. I love his attitude. I hope he gets six hundreds to really push his name up (for Tests).?

Maxwell received his first national call-up for Australia?s limited-overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, played during August/September this year. He impressed with composed performances, including an unbeaten 56 in the final ODI of the 3-match series ? outings which saw him being selected for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012. Despite having made a name for himself in the limited-overs formats of the game, the 23-year-old (with 770 runs and one century from 11 first-class games to his credit) has expressed the desire to put in some impressive first-class performances, in order to earn a Test debut.

England?s wicketkeeper batsman Craig Kieswetter has stressed on the need for the team?s batsmen to adopt a more ?street-wise? approach, as they look to tackle spin bowling effectively during the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012.

?You've got to be more streetwise, be prepared to score ugly runs,? stressed Kieswetter, following the team?s shocking 90-run defeat at the hands of India on September 23. ?We've got to be adaptable to the wickets.?

England conceded their worst T20I defeat yet ? a 90-run loss ? to India after the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh (4/12) and Piyush Chawla (2/13) completely demolished their batting order. Craig Kieswetter? 35 was the top score of the day for the Poms, and they were all out at 80 ? the lowest total they have ever registered in the format. However, having already qualified for the Super Eights stage of the tournament, England will be moving on regardless, although the lesson in playing spin should serve them well as they gear up for their next match, against the West Indies, where they will be tackling mystery spinner Sunil Narine.

Kate Middleton to Sue Over Topless Pictures, Breach of Privacy

Within hours of Kate Middleton topless pictures burning up the Internet and the pages of French tabloid Closer, the Royal Family is reportedly planning action against the magazine behind these images.

A rep for St. James's Palace just released a statement saying that "legal proceedings for breach of privacy have been commenced today in France" by Kate and William. No further details were included.

Kate Middleton Smirks

The move does not come as a shock, considering the family's swift and forceful reaction to the photos in question.

"The incident is reminiscent of the worst excess of the paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so," said a spokesman for Clarence House, the Prince of Wales' office, early this morning.

But that's not how Laurence Pieau of Closer sees it. This editor doesn't see why there's any fuss being made over the shots at all.

"These photos are not in the least shocking," he told the Agence France-Presse. "They show a young woman sunbathing topless, like the millions of women you see on beaches."

If Pieau actually believed this, of course, it would raise the question: Why run the supposedly mundane pictures in the first place?

Fortunately, this scandalous hullabaloo does have a silver lining for the Royals: There's no talk anymore about Kate Middleton pregnant rumors, is there?

Life-threatening surf for Mexico, Baja Calif. coasts

By NBC News staff

Tropical Storm Kristy was expected to create life-threatening surf and rip currents of the coast of southern Baja California and southwest Mexico over the next few days, the National Hurricane Center warned Friday.

The NHC said winds had weakened to 50 mph by Friday afternoon but still posed a danger.

Tropical storm-force winds extended about 140 miles from the center.

?Swells generated by Kristy will affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico and southern Baja California during the next day or two,? the NHC notice said.

?These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,? it added.

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Nadine had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and was about 765 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, according to the NHC.

It was expected to turn north Friday and then head northeast toward the Azores Islands.

The NHC said little change in Nadine?s strength was expected but added ?any strengthening would allow Nadine to become a hurricane.?

Storm-force winds extended about 230 miles from the center.

Manning looks the same, but he knows better

By ARNIE STAPLETON

AP Pro Football Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:31 p.m. ET Sept. 13, 2012

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Peyton Manning looked as though nothing had changed after sitting out last season because of a neck injury. Don't be fooled, though, says the Broncos quarterback - plenty is different.

And not just the horse on his helmet.

Manning insists he's still searching for a comfort zone in Denver and figures his transition after 14 seasons in Indianapolis will take all season. Same with his rehab from the nerve injury that caused weakness in his throwing arm and forced him to miss last season.

Broncos boss John Elway agrees, telling The Associated Press that Manning's arm strength is "probably not where he wants it to be. I don't know if it'll ever be where he wants it to be, but to me, it's plenty adequate right now."

Teammates, opponents, even his former coach, NBC analyst Tony Dungy, who was on hand to chronicle his Denver debut, agreed that Manning hadn't missed a beat.

Appearances can be deceiving, though. Just last week, Manning said, "I have some things that I deal with myself, but I kind of keep that between me and the trainer."

Manning's game, this new offense, his timing with his targets, even his health, are all works in progress, Elway told the AP in an interview Thursday.

"There's going to be adjustments week in and week out," Elway said. "He knew those guys in Indy, those receivers, he had them forever and so it will be a work in progress, to me, as long as Peyton's here, because he's going to change things and there's going to be new things all the time.

"And especially with his rehab and continuing to work because I don't know if he's where he wants to be. It doesn't sound like it is. But I'm not sure if he'll ever get to where he wants to be unless he wins two Super Bowls and he'll say, `I'm where I want to be."'

Elway is betting Manning gets to hoist that second Vince Lombardi trophy.

The quarterback's work ethic is "what gave us confidence that he was going to be able to come back and be as close to the Peyton he was of old," said Elway, who spoke to AP while promoting the Dove Men+Care "Journey to Comfort" campaign. "The question was: How fast? And he's made tremendous strides from the time we saw him in March until now. He's just kept getting better and better. Plus, he worked his tail off, and we saw it in training camp. He had a good training camp. The arm's getting stronger all the time, too."

Manning never has been known for throwing frozen ropes like Brett Favre.

"No, he's always been the cerebral guy, and it's the way he plays the game and takes advantage of everything on the cerebral side," Elway said. "And I think the mind never goes backward, unless it gets hit and knocked out or something like that. But that's why it's just a matter of physically if he could get caught back up.

"A lot of it's like riding a bike for him and plus putting in new, different things that he can do because he loves the mental side and the mental warfare that goes on with the game, as we saw last week when he stood there and stared at Troy Polamalu for 20 seconds down in the red zone. So, he loves the mental warfare that goes on and he'll just continue to get better with that."

Elway said he's having a ball watching No. 18.

"He's already in the Hall of Fame. He's one of the best quarterbacks to play the game now and so he's just trying to add to that legacy," Elway said. "Plus, he raises everybody around him because they know that he gives us a chance to compete every time we go into a ballgame. And that's huge for a team, to have that hope. That's what gets everybody fired up and ready to play week in and week out, to know that you can win that game."

Elway said the biggest barrier in Manning's transition is learning a second language at age 36 - the new terminology he had to absorb as the Broncos blended their old power formations with some of the spread formations he ran in Indianapolis.

After a solid preseason, Manning looked as sharp as ever in his Denver debut, completing 73 percent of his passes and posting an AFC-best 129.2 passer rating in a 31-19 win over Pittsburgh last weekend.

"Gosh, like he hadn't missed a beat," was how Atlanta coach Mike Smith described it. "He was very efficient, looked like the Peyton Manning that I watched two years ago when he was playing.

"I thought he had a very good command of the offense, threw the ball extremely well, had some throws off to the wide side of the field that looked like the old Peyton," added Smith, whose Falcons (1-0) host the Broncos (1-0) Monday night. "And watching him run the no-huddle was reminiscent of having to play against him when I was in Jacksonville."

That's the Manning that Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has seen every day in practice:

"He's back," Bailey said. "He's back and he's ready. I've never seen a guy work as hard as him. I look forward to good things every week."

Three Broncos who played with Manning in Indianapolis are hard-pressed to find any fissures in the game of the four-time MVP who's coming off four neck operations.

"Well, nothing's different really, I guess the uniform," running back Lance Ball said.

"He's getting better every week, but he's the same guy," said tight end Jacob Tamme.

"To me, he looks the same," said slot receiver Brandon Stokley. "But Peyton, he's the type of guy that's always going to say he's got more work to do and he needs to get better. So, that's just the way he is."

That's what makes him great, Ball said.

"Any great player will always be critical of themselves and always see that there's room for improvement," Ball said. "You can never be perfect."

Dungy said it looks like opponents will have to deal with Manning and his no-huddle offense for years to come. And Elway, who won his two Super Bowl titles at ages 37 and 38, said he believes Manning can be as good in Denver as he ever was in Indianapolis.

"He's not a guy that gets hit a lot and he plays a cerebral game," Elway said. "And so, that's why to me he can play as long as he wants to play and he feels like he's living up to the standards that he's set for himself. And he'll be the one that determines that."

Mexican Navy says captures top drug boss "El Coss"

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Mexican Navy said on Wednesday it had captured one of Mexico's most wanted drug bosses, the head of the Gulf Cartel, in what would mark a major victory in President Felipe Calderon's crackdown on organized crime.

The Navy said it would give more details about the arrest of the man it believed to be Jorge Costilla, alias "El Coss," when it parades him in front of the media early on Thursday.

A government security official said Costilla, 41, was detained in Tampico in northeastern Mexico, where the cartel is active, without putting up a fight. The U.S. State Department has a reward of up to $5 million for his capture.

No other details were immediately available.

The arrest of the suspected capo comes barely a week after the Mexican Navy captured senior Gulf Cartel member Mario Cardenas, alias "Fatso," also in the state of Tamaulipas where Costilla was caught.

The Gulf Cartel has been weakened by a violent turf war with the Zetas, a gang formed by army deserters which acted as enforcers for the cartel before breaking with their employers in 2010.

It could also have political implications because top officials in the cartel's stronghold of Tamaulipas have been accused of taking money from local drug gangs.

"All these politicians who were getting money from the Gulf Cartel ought to be very worried now because this information is going to come to light in Mexico or the United States," said Alberto Islas, a security expert at consultancy Risk Evaluation, after hearing the reports of Costilla's capture.

Costilla features prominently on a wanted list of 37 kingpins the Mexican government published in 2009. Well over 20 on that list have now been captured or killed.

Still, the Mexican Navy has erred before in its claims, saying in June it had captured a son of Mexico's most wanted man Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, only to later admit that it had not.

DAMAGING REVELATIONS

Islas said he expected Costilla to be extradited to the United States, and that his testimony could prove damaging to officials in Tamaulipas and neighboring Veracruz state, which has also been dogged by allegations of corruption.

Tomas Yarrington, a governor of Tamaulipas between 1999 and 2005, is fugitive and wanted in Mexico for aiding drug gangs.

Yarrington governed Tamaulipas for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which will retake the presidency in December after its candidate Enrique Pena Nieto won a July 1 election. The PRI suspended Yarrington from the party in May.

Islas said damaging revelations about graft would raise pressure on Pena Nieto to take steps to clean up the image of the centrist PRI, which governed Mexico between 1929 and 2000. That rule was tainted by frequent allegations of corruption.

The FBI said Costilla is believed to have taken over the daily operations of the cartel after his former boss Osiel Cardenas was arrested and jailed in Mexico in 2003.

It said a federal arrest warrant was issued for Costilla in Texas in 2002, and that he was charged with drug offenses, threatening to assault and murder federal agents, and money laundering.

The FBI's wanted notice includes a grainy photograph of Costilla wearing a cowboy hat and a moustache.

With Costilla's apparent capture, the cartel is looking increasingly weak, and bloody turf wars for control of the northeastern border with Texas would now intensify. "There will be an increase in violence there," Islas said.

The stage was now set for increased hostilities in the region between Mexico's two most powerful gangs, Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel and the Zetas, he noted.

This could prove a headache for Pena Nieto, who has vowed to quickly reduce the number of beheadings and mass executions. There have been more than 55,000 drug-related deaths in Calderon's six-year offensive against cartels.

Oil price up after attack on US consulate in Libya

Oil traded above $97 a barrel Thursday after attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions and the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya sparked new worries about unrest in the Middle East.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude was up 25 cents at $97.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 16 cents Wednesday to end at $97.01 per barrel in New York.

In London, Brent crude was down 8 cents at $115.25 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died after an attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi on Tuesday. The attack in Libya came hours after a mob stormed the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down the U.S. flag. On Thursday, protesters stormed the American embassy in Yemen.

Analysts said the while impact of the attacks on oil prices had been subdued thus far, risks were on the rise.

"The fact that all of this is occurring without a price impact on oil shows that a geopolitical premium is already priced in," said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland. "We need however to keep in mind that due to the sanctions on Iran there is absolutely no room for another disruption in any oil producing country."

Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in an email commentary that he expects "the fundamental picture to be overtaken by the powder keg that was ignited yesterday in Libya ... we will be keeping a close eye on tension in the region."

Traders were also awaiting the end of a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting at which central bankers were widely expected to announce new steps to help the flagging U.S. economy.

Should the Fed fail to announce the awaited measures, "we may see crude prices unwind some of their recent gains as the dollar corrects higher," said a report from Sucden Financial Research in London. A stronger dollar makes crude more expensive and a less attractive investment for traders using other currencies. Early Thursday, the euro was up to $1.2911 from $1.2900 late Wednesday in New York.

In other trading on the Nymex, heating oil fell 0.65 cents to $3.2217 per gallon. Wholesale gasoline dropped 0.76 cent to $2.994 per gallon. Natural gas lost 2 cents to $3.043 per 1,000 cubic feet.

US nears deal to cut Egypt debt by $1 bn: report

The United States is weighing a deal with Egypt's new rulers to relieve $1 billion worth of debt, The New York Times reported.

US President Barack Obama first promised the aid in May 2011, along with another $1 billion destined to assist Egypt's democratic transition after the fall of longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt, which has seen its economy worsen since Mubarak's overthrow in February 2011, asked last month for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, which in turn urged economic reforms.

The Times said that the Obama administration last week sent the first of two delegations to detail the proposed debt assistance, along with $375 million in financing and loan guarantees for American lenders who invest in Egypt and a $60 million investment fund for Egyptian businesses.

"Our goal is to send a very strong message to Egypt that the government understands it's not just about assistance," the newspaper quoted Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides as saying. "It's about growth and business."

He was speaking ahead of a large business delegation led by the State Department and the US Chamber of Commerce that will take executives from nearly 50 US firms to Cairo starting Saturday.

The Times said the executives and the officials traveling with them, including Nides, will call on the President Mohamed Morsi's government to make reforms in taxation, bankruptcy and labor laws in order to foster investment.

"It's important for the US to give Egypt a reason to look to the West, as well as the East," said Lionel Johnson, the chamber's vice president for the Middle East and North Africa.

Morsi is Egypt's first democratically elected leader and the first Islamist to lead the Arab world's most populous country.

WEATHER WATCH

Republicans had a hurricane to contend with during their national convention last week in Florida.

Now it's the Democrats' turn to fret about the weather.

They're keeping a close eye on the forecast in Charlotte, where President Barack Obama is scheduled to accept his party's nomination Thursday night at an outdoor football stadium with 74,000 seats.

Convention planners have to decide by Tuesday whether to shift the speech to a smaller, indoor arena.

What about the Kids' Vote? | Better After 50

Politics is heating up. The conversations at dinner with friends are 90 percent about the candidates and their issues. Brought up as a liberal New Englander, my track record has been to vote Democrat across the board.

This year I am listening with a different ear.? I am less focused on the party; I care most about the issues.? When I talk to the kids in my college classroom they too care more about issues vs. party. This makes for great heated conversations.

Steven Covey, in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, says one important key to success is ?to put first things first.? There is so much chatter around the candidates and their personalities, etc., that it?s distracting. The Covey approach really helps the decision process.

Cream rises to the top when I focus on the issues and that is making my choice of candidate quite simple.

This summer, my husband?s family visited us for the weekend, and his niece brought her friend from college. She was from the South and had just graduated.? ?You must be very excited to be eligible to vote in this presidential election,? I said with a sweet earnest smile. Her reply: ?Not really. I really don?t know enough to make a decision. I am not fully informed on the topics or the candidates, so I don?t feel comfortable about voting. I?m not sure I am going to vote.?? I felt the hair stand up on my arms: ?Not vote! screamed inside my head?

Trying not to lecture, but ever the teacher (Lord help this captive guest who is eating our food at our table), I felt it was my job to get her informed before the dessert course, and off to the polls. I could sense my husband?s niece tensing up, knowing her step-aunt was revving into gear.

Pushing the peas around on my plate, I gently said to this lovely guest, ?It?s easy to get informed. Let?s just start with the issues.? What?s the most important issue to you?? I nodded to Steven Covey for his simple, sophomoric guidance.? Our young guest squirmed a bit and said, she wasn?t sure. Okay? I then offered her a menu of issues-? let?s just say there are a few: health care, women?s right to choose, taxes?.? Oh, now she was ready.

?Taxes.??? Wow?I didn?t quite expect that. She is 22 years old, working in an entry level job in the service industry, and taxes are her number one issue? Really? My cloak of calm was ruffling. Why was she avoiding the ?hot? topic? ?Why taxes?? I asked. ? I just don?t think we should be paying so much for all the government services; we don?t need them.? People shouldn?t have to pay so much.?? And that was that. There was quiet.? I kept my mouth shut and reflected on geography. This young lady is from an area that had been devastated by hurricanes and tropical storms that had received plenty of government relief, but I decided not to go there.

I pivoted -? ?You are a woman. Are women?s issues less important or more important than taxes?? ?Oh yes, it?s true they are the most important,? she agreed. She began to look animated-?this was clearly her ?hot? topic. She owned this one. I was thrilled to see her so engaged.

?Actually, I don?t believe in abortion, but I think women should be able to choose if they want to have one.? The niece piped in, wide-eyed, and said to her friend, ?You wouldn?t have an abortion if you were raped, honestly you wouldn?t??? ?Oh well, of course-?of course I would.? But I really don?t believe in them.?

I was so happy the 22 year olds were off and running, now fully engaged in this dialogue?but they were not happy.? They don?t like talking politics-?it?s too divisive.

OK, back to the peas?. I acknowledged this woman?s clear position and was thrilled that I almost midwifed a vote (or so I thought).

?So which candidate do you think supports your passion around ?CHOICE,? because it looks like you know where you stand on this issue??? She unexcitedly says, ?Obama.? But I can?t vote for him.?

Oh, I was confused?Steven Covey where are you? This wasn?t working. Are our kids destined to vote their families? ticket or can they step out and vote their own minds and hearts? ?My husband gently placed his hand on my shoulder, cleared my plate, and asked if anyone would like a nice, sweet piece of cake.

This midwife had just experienced false labor.

India lose openers after brisk start in N.Z. Test

India, needing 261 runs to win, lost free-scoring Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir as they reached 88-2 at lunch on the penultimate day of the second and final Test against New Zealand on Monday.

The hosts made an explosive start as Sehwag (38) and Gambhir (34) added 77 runs off just 11.5 overs for the opening wicket, but New Zealand struck back with two wickets in the space of six runs.

Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten on 10 at the break with Sachin Tendulkar, who had yet to open his account.

New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor pressed off-spinner Jeetan Patel into the attack in the 12th over after pacemen Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Doug Bracewell had failed to trouble the Indian openers.

Sehwag lofted Patel over long-off, the first six of the innings, and then cut him for a four before falling in the same over. He stepped out to try another big shot, but missed the line and was bowled.

He smashed one six and seven fours in his brisk 33-ball knock.

Gambhir went for his shots early in the innings, hitting Boult and Bracewell each for two successive fours before falling to a loose shot.

He was caught by Taylor at first slip off Boult after hitting seven fours in his 58-ball knock.

Brendon McCullum kept wicket for New Zealand in place of Kruger van Wyk, who was injured after being struck on the arm by a delivery from paceman Umesh Yadav while batting on Sunday.

New Zealand were earlier bowled out for 248 in their second innings, adding 16 runs to their overnight total of 232-9.

Patel (22), the last man out, looked unhappy with the decision when given caught behind off left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin finished with 5-69, while fast bowler Umesh Yadav and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha each bagged two wickets.

(AP) ? For much of Iraq's youth, sporting blingy makeup, slicked-up hair and skintight jeans is just part of living the teenage dream. But for their elders, it's a nightmare.

A new culture rift is emerging in Iraq, as young women replace shapeless cover-ups with ankle-baring skirts and tight blouses, while men strut around in revealing slacks and spiky haircuts. The relatively skimpy styles have prompted Islamic clerics in at least two Iraqi cities to mobilize the "fashion police" in the name of protecting religious values.

"I see the way they (police) look at me ? they don't like it," said Mayada Hamid, 32, wearing a pink leopard-print headscarf with jeans, a blue blouse and lots of sparkly eyeliner Sunday while shopping at the famous gold market in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kazimiyah.

She rolled her eyes. "It's just suppression." So far, though, there are no reports of the police actually taking action.

This is a conflict playing out across the Arab world, where conservative Islamic societies grapple with the effects of Western influence, especially the most obvious ? the way their young choose to dress.

The violations of old Iraqi norms have grown especially egregious, religious officials say, since the Aug. 20 end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month. In the last two weeks, posters and banners have been hanging along the streets of Kazimiyah, sternly reminding women to wear an abaya ? a long, loose black cloak that covers the body from shoulders to feet.

A similar warning came from Diwaniyah, a Shiite city about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of the capital, where some posters have painted a red X over pictures of women wearing pants. Other banners praise women who keep their hair fully covered beneath a headscarf.

Religious officials speculate young Iraqis got carried away in celebrating the end of Ramadan and now need to be reined in.

"We support personal freedoms, but there are places that have a special status," said Sheik Mazin Saadi, a Shiite cleric from Kazimiyah, home to the double gold-domed shrine that is one of Shiite Islam's holiest sites.

He said the area's residents lobbied Baghdad's local government to ban unveiled women from walking around the neighborhood, including its sprawling open-air market that attracts people from across Iraq.

"The women started to follow to this order," Saadi said.

Government leaders in Baghdad say they've issued no such ban and ordered some of the warning posters removed. The rule "is only for the female visitors who go inside the shrine itself," said Sabar al-Saadi, chairman of the Baghdad provincial council's legal committee. "We think that wearing a veil for women in Iraq is a personal decision."

Muslim women generally wear headscarves or veils in public out of modesty, and female worshippers are required to wear an abaya or other loose robes in shrines and mosques.

But over the last several years, following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and the fall of dictator Saddam Hussein, Western styles have crept into Iraq's fashion palate. Form-fitting clothing, stylish shoes and men's edgy hairstyles are commonly seen on the street. Some younger women have even begun to forgo the hijab, or headscarf.

Their parents ? and their parents' parents ? fear Western influence will drown out Iraq's centuries of culture and respect for religion.

"We as Iraqis do not respect our traditions," said Fadhil Jawad, 65, a gold seller near the Kazimiyah shrine. He estimated his profits have dropped by 10 percent in the last two weeks since authorities posted warnings about improper dress codes at the entrance to the market. He called the financial loss worth the lesson being imposed.

"Legs can be seen, there are low-cut shirts," Jawad lamented. "And all, very, very tight. I think these Iraqis who are wearing these things have come back from Syria, Dubai and Egypt. They probably spent too much time in nightclubs. The families in Kazimiyah are conservative. These young people ? nobody can control them. They should be given freedoms, but they should know their limits."

Several young adults strolling the Kazimiyah gold market on Sunday accused the religious class of trying to pull Iraq back to the dark ages, a sentiment that human rights activist Hana Adwar echoed.

"It is an aggression on the rights of not only religious minorities, but also on secular Muslim women who do not want to wear veils," said Adwar, head of the Baghdad-based Iraqi Hope Association.

Men, too, have been targeted in the fashion flap: Edgy haircuts, tattoos and body piercings have angered religious authorities. But Hassan Mahdi, 22, said he does not care.

"No, hell no, nobody can tell me what to do," said Mahdi, sporting a tight turquoise Adidas tracksuit and a trendy moptop hairdo at the Kazimiyah market.

So far, it appears, the fashion police have stopped short of taking any real steps. Guards at two security checkpoints in Kazimiyah said they have not been ordered to stop daring dressers from entering the market, and 17-year-old Ali Sayeed Abdullah said his slicked-up pompadour didn't prevent him from going into the shrine. "Nobody objected," he said. "But if there is a ban on this, I will change it," referring to his hairstyle.

But some women have been handed tissues at Kazimiyah checkpoints and told to wipe off their makeup before entering the market, said resident Hakima Mahdi, 59.

"This is very good," she said, smiling broadly, sheathed in a black cloak with an extra abaya covering her head. "It's respect to the imam, respect to this holy place."

Republicans gear up publicity for Democrats' convention party

WOLFEBORO, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Republicans are preparing to unleash an aggressive publicity effort at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina this week.

While Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney rests in New Hampshire on Monday, his running mate Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan and other Republican officials will invade the Democratic gathering where President Barack Obama will kick off the home stretch of the race for the White House.

The Romney campaign indicated in a press release that the Republicans would "bracket" the convention with a new emphasis on the question: "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"

In the release, a Romney campaign official kicked off the week's counter-messaging with a blistering attack, saying that at the Democratic convention, Obama "is going to give us a series of excuses, alibis and scapegoats."

"Every president since the Great Depression, except Jimmy Carter and President Obama, who asked for a second term could look back at the last four years and say: "you are better off than you were four years ago," the official said.

Ryan, the Republican nominee to be vice president, will hold a campaign event in the same state in Greenville.

Reince Priebus and Congressman Jason Chaffetz of Utah on Monday will open a "'Obama isn't working' Rapid Response Center."

Romney will spend much of the week in Vermont, using the time preparing for his three debates against Obama, a campaign official said Saturday.
