If true, that also suggests a political expediency at the expense of moral integrity.
Leading experts say legalizing marijuana in the US would double or triple the number of people with a dangerous dependency on pot to 12 million. And the amount of time that pot users would be intoxicated would also double or triple, with an estimated $100 billion loss of worker productivity to the economy. That figure far surpasses the money spent on anti-marijuana enforcement.
Despite federal actions against medical-marijuana abuses, sometimes words can speak louder. Obama, himself a reformed pot user, should simply state his disapproval at passage of these ballot initiatives. (Mitt Romney has said he will rigorously enforce the federal ban.)
Marijuana use need never become as pervasive as that of alcohol if government leaders head off the legalization movement.
Obama has plenty of moral backup. Nine former chiefs of the Drug Enforcement Administration asked Mr. Holder in a letter last month to publicly oppose the ballot initiatives. ?To continue to remain silent conveys to the American public and the global community a tacit acceptance of these dangerous initiatives,? they wrote.
Passage of the three measures ? Amendment 64 in Colorado, Measure 80 in Oregon, and Initiative 502 in Washington ? could lead to massive violations of the federal Controlled Substances Act ? and not just by ordinary citizens who would start to use pot openly, but state workers who assist in growing and selling it.
Such widespread lawlessness would be on the scale of the current population of illegal immigrants, a problem that corrodes the rule of law and creates deep political divisions among Americans.
As difficult as it might be, the president need only spend a minute at a microphone in coming days stating his opposition to legalizing pot.

A new research review paper on the effects of the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique on the prevention and treatment of heart disease among youth and adults provides the hard evidence needed to include such evidence-based alternative approaches into private- and government-sponsored wellness programs aimed at preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.
The paper, "Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease in Adolescents and Adults through the Transcendental Meditation Program: A Research Review Update" is published in Current Hypertension Reviews, 2012, Vol. 8, No. 3.
- In teens, the TM technique has been found to reduce blood pressure, improve heart structure and improve school behavior. According to the paper, the technique has been shown to be a safe alternative. The NIH-sponsored clinical trials conducted with TM mentioned in this review did not observe any adverse effects from TM practice.
- In adults the technique reduced stress hormones and other physiological measures of stress and produced more rapid recovery from stress, decreased blood pressure and use of blood pressure medication, decreased heart pain in angina patients, cleared the arteries, reducing the risk of stroke, improved distance walked in patients with congestive heart failure, and decreased alcohol and tobacco use, anxiety, depression, and medical care usage and expenditures. The technique also decreased risk of death from heart disease, cancer, and all causes.
"These findings have important implications for inclusion of the Transcendental Meditation program in medical efforts to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease," says Dr. Vernon Barnes, lead author and research scientist at Georgia Health Sciences University, in Augusta, Georgia.
"This review is potentially more important than individual research papers because it shows that TM has an integrated, holistic effect on all levels of cardiovascular disease," says co-author, Dr. David Orme-Johnson.
Orme-Johnson says that no other meditation technique has been shown to produce this constellation of changes, especially when it comes to hard measures of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Barnes said it was important to start preventing heart disease with adolescents before the disease sets. "Adding Transcendental Meditation at a young age could prevent future cardiovascular disease and save many lives, not to mention reduce the national medical bill by billions of dollars."
Uniqueness of the Transcendental Meditation technique
The uniqueness of the outcomes of the TM technique may have something to do with the mechanics of the practice of the technique itself says Dr. Barnes. "Meditation practices are different from each other and therefore produce different results. And this is a very important consideration when evaluating the application of meditation as an alternative and complementary medical approach."

The two common categories are focused attention, concentrating on an object or an emotion, like compassion; and open monitoring, being mindful of one's breath or thoughts, either contemplating the meaning of them, or just observing them.

The TM technique does not employ any active form of concentration or contemplation, but allows the mind to effortlessly experience the thought process at more refined levels until thinking comes to a quiet settled state without any mental activity. The mind is awake inside and the body is resting deeply, a level of rest much deeper than deep sleep. It is this state of restful alertness that allows the body to make the necessary repairs to rebalance its normal functioning. Ryan says Obama lacked new solutions during debate
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama failed to bring any new ideas that could revive the economy during the second presidential debate, Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said Wednesday.
Ryan told supporters in the Cleveland area that running mate Mitt Romney followed up a strong first debate with another winning performance.
The Wisconsin congressman said Obama is out of answers and it showed in Tuesday night's debate. "This might be the best President Obama can give us, but it's not what we should settle for," Ryan said.
Later in Columbus, Ryan appeared at an event tailored to display his strength on fiscal issues. Eleven dinner companions at an Italian restaurant on the city's east side peppered him with questions on the federal debt, taxes and Obama's health care law.
"Do you have a whiteboard here?" Ryan quipped with a smile when he was asked to explain how a Romney administration would tackle the deficit.
He inquired when joining the table if diners had already said grace. When the answer was yes, he said he'd say his own private prayer.
Several dozen protesters organized by SEIU Local 1199 and ProgressOhio chanted, "Four more years!" and waved signs outside the event. They brought clean pots and pans and displayed signs that said, "Soup Kitchen Photo Op - NO."
While in northeast Ohio, Ryan mixed politics with football in Ohio ?two topics that are unavoidable this fall in the prized swing state ? by dropping in on practice at the Cleveland Browns facility with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a lifelong Browns fan.
Both took turns talking with the team.
Ryan told the players he's been impressed by the play of rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, but it turns out he was pointing at backup quarterback Colt McCoy. That got a good laugh out of their teammates. Ryan recovered quickly, mentioning the team's victory over Cincinnati last Sunday.
Ryan also shared his favorite hunting spots with Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas, who's also a Wisconsin native. Ryan lamented that he's missing hunting season this fall. "I've got this election thing going on," he told Thomas.
Earlier at Baldwin-Wallace University, Ryan said that Obama's campaign is now trying to scare voters because he can't run on his record. "He gives us a growing debt and no solutions," Ryan said.
The Romney-Ryan ticket says its economic plan would grow jobs in the energy industry and through small businesses, helping to create 12 million jobs.
Obama spokeswoman Jessica Kershaw said Romney's plan would end up hurting the middle class and only benefit the wealthy through $5 trillion in tax cuts. "Mitt Romney misled voters time and again last night and refused to explain his indefensible ideas when he was exposed on the emptiness of his own plans," she said.
One dinner guest in Columbus asked Ryan if he could dispel the notion that he and Romney would raise taxes on the middle class. He said it's a mistaken idea perpetuated by "hundreds of millions of dollars in negative advertising."
Ryan said he and Romney have records of cutting taxes and plan to continue to do so if elected.
Rice also joined Ryan at the rally at Baldwin-Wallace University. She told the crowd that it has been a rough decade, starting with the terrorist attacks in 2001 and the economic collapse near the end of the decade. "The last four years have been very tough on people who just want to work hard and make a living," Rice said.
She said the country is at a crossroads, adding: "We cannot continue to spend money that we cannot afford to pay back."

Fast-spinning Earth settles mystery of moon's make-up
For the first time, two new models of the giant collision that spawned the moon can explain why our satellite seems to be made of the same stuff as Earth. Both rely on the very young Earth spinning much faster than was thought possible ? resulting in a day lasting just 2.5 hours.
The moon is thought to have formed from the debris remaining after a planet-sized object collided with the early Earth some 4.5 billion years ago. The trouble is that until now, impact simulations have always resulted in a moon made mainly of material from the impactor.
That conflicts with analyses of lunar rocks carried out over the last 10 years. They show that the ratios of oxygen isotopes are almost identical on the Earth and the moon, suggesting the two bodies formed from the same material. Meteorites from Mars and asteroids have very different oxygen isotope compositions from the Earth, so the impacting proto-planet probably did, too.
"There's been this quandary," says Robin Canup of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. "How do you end up with a moon and Earth that have identical oxygen isotope composition?"
Rotation clue
The two new models resolve the conundrum thanks to a new insight about the rate of Earth's rotation in the solar system's chaotic early days.
Earlier collision models all assumed that just after the moon formed, the Earth rotated once every 5 hours. That's because the moon started out much closer to the Earth than it is now, and has been drifting away slowly ever since (it is still receding by a few centimetres every year). Just as an ice skater that pulls her arms in will spin faster, because angular momentum is conserved, the Earth spun faster when the moon was closer ? and spun slower and slower the further out the moon moved. Taking this into account, a five-hour day at the time of the moon's formation results in the 24-hour day we have now.
But models featuring Earth spinning at this rate during the great collision always resulted in dynamics that produce a moon with the wrong composition.
So recently, Matija Cuk of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, and Sarah Stewart of Harvard University have suggested a new mechanism for slowing down Earth's spin. It meant Earth could have had a day as short as 2.5 hours when the great collision occurred ? and still have the 24-hour day we observe now. The mechanism involves gravitational tugs by the sun on the moon that, in turn, allow the moon to "steal" momentum from the Earth, slowing it more aggressively.
Smaller, faster impactor
Now, Canup, who saw Cuk and Stewart's work presented in February, has used the insight to create a full model of moon formation.
In her model, two bodies, each about half the current mass of the Earth, come together and stick. The energy from the impact melts them both. Most of the mass is merged into a central planet, but a bit streams out into a surrounding disc, which coalesces into the moon within 100 years. The resulting two objects have the same composition because of thorough mixing of the molten rocks following the impact.
Such a model seemed impossible previously because it spits out an Earth with a 2.5-hour day ? but thanks to Cuk and Stewart, that's no longer a problem.
Cuk and Stewart, meanwhile, have come up with a rival model. They find that if you assume that Earth already had a 2.5-hour day before the collision, a much smaller, faster impactor than previously thought possible can create a moon. Similar to Canup's model, the resulting planet and moon would both be about 90 per cent proto-Earth material, 10 per cent impactor material.
Cuk claims his model is more likely. "It's easier to have a smaller body, because there are more of them," he says. Based on simulation data, Canup says that the odds of the impactor being the same size as the proto-Earth are about 1 in 5. "It's not overly improbable," she says.
Neither model is the final word on the formation of the moon, says Erik Asphaug of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was not involved in the new studies. But allowing the Earth to spin faster will open up a new set of ideas that couldn't be explored before. "There's a big new conversation beginning," he says.

Discovery of gatekeeper nerve cells explains the effect of nicotine on learning and memory
Monday, October 8, 2012Swedish researchers at Uppsala University have, together with Brazilian collaborators, discovered a new group of nerve cells that regulate processes of learning and memory. These cells act as gatekeepers and carry a receptor for nicotine, which can explain our ability to remember and sort information.
The discovery of the gatekeeper cells, which are part of a memory network together with several other nerve cells in the hippocampus, reveal new fundamental knowledge about learning and memory. The study is published today in Nature Neuroscience.
The hippocampus is an area of the brain that is important for consolidation of information into memories and helps us to learn new things. The newly discovered gatekeeper nerve cells, also called OLM-alpha2 cells, provide an explanation to how the flow of information is controlled in the hippocampus.
"It is known that nicotine improves cognitive processes including learning and memory, but this is the first time that an identified nerve cell population is linked to the effects of nicotine", says Professor Klas Kullander at Scilifelab and Uppsala University.
Humans think, learn and memorize with the help of nerve cells sending signals between each other. Some nerve cells send signals far away to other areas of the brain, while other neurons send signals within the same area. Local nerve circuits in the hippocampus process impressions and turn some of them into memories. But how does this work? And how can nicotine improve this mechanism?
The new research study literally sheds new light on this intriguing mechanism.
"We have used a new technology called optogenetics, in which light is used to stimulate selected nerve cells. We were amazed when we discovered that light activation of the gatekeeper cells alters the flow of information in the hippocampus in the same way as nicotine does", explains coauthor Richardson Le?o.
Through research on mice, the scientists showed that the gatekeeper cells connect to the principal cell of the hippocampus. Active gatekeeper cells prioritize local circuit signals arriving to the principal cell, while inactive gatekeeper cells allow inputs from long-distance targets. Nicotine activates the gatekeeper cell, thereby prioritizing the formation of memories via local inputs.
Next, the scientists want to test which types of memory and learning may be selected for by the activation of gatekeeper cells. With such knowledge, it may be possible to stimulate these nerve cells by artificial means, for example by selective nicotine-like drugs, to improve memory and learning in humans.
"Ideally, one would like to access the positive effects of nicotine on the hippocampus's ability to process information, but without creating the strong nicotine dependence that keep smokers addicted to inhaling dangerous tobacco smoke", says Klas Kullander.

THE RACE: Romney sees opening on foreign policy
In turning to foreign policy, Mitt Romney is playing to a traditionally Republican strength while trying to build on momentum from his winning performance in last week's presidential debate.
He's also resurrecting an old GOP theme: that President Barack Obama's policies have reduced U.S. influence around the world ? particularly in the Middle East.
"If America doesn't lead, others will, others who don't share our interests or our values," Romney told an audience Monday at Virginia Military Institute.
Romney has suggested in the past that Obama had "apologized" for U.S. behavior and values while overseas, an accusation not borne out by the facts.
While he didn't use such words on Monday, he said that friends and allies want more, not less, American leadership and that, "We must show them that we still have faith in ourselves."
Polls have shown that Obama generally does better on handling national security and foreign policy issues than the former Massachusetts governor.
Romney generally has dwelled more on U.S. economic woes. But with the economy showing some recent employment gains and last month's deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya and anti-U.S. protests in Egypt, his team saw a new opening on foreign policy.
Fighting back, Obama's campaign released a new TV ad in Virginia denouncing Romney's foreign-affairs policies as "reckless" and "amateurish."
"We're not going to be lectured by someone who's been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy every time he's dipped his toe in the foreign policy waters," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Romney also planned a rally in Newport News, Va.
On the other side of the country, Obama had three fundraisers in San Francisco and was declaring a national monument at the home of Cesar Chavez, the deceased founder of the United Farmworkers ? a move no doubt calculated to help rally Latino support.

Israeli Arab accused of spying for Hezbollah
JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli authorities on Thursday indicted an Arab citizen of Israel on charges of spying for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, accusing him of gathering intelligence on security for Israel's president and on army installations.
The Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency said in a statement that Milad Khatib, 26, from the northern village of Majd al-Krum, was recruited in 2009 by a Lebanese Hezbollah operative in Denmark. He was ordered to collect information on Israeli army bases and armories, as well as details on security guards and motorcades of the Israeli president and other public officials.
In August, Khatib allegedly shadowed a visit by Peres to his home town, collecting information on his security detail. Authorities say he intended to pass the details to his Hezbollah operator but was arrested before he could do so. It was unclear what information, if any, he supplied Hezbollah.
Peres' office did not respond to a message seeking comment.
Hostility between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah runs deep. The two sides fought a bloody, monthlong war in mid-2006 that ended in a stalemate, starting after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.
Israel believes Hezbollah possesses more than 40,000 rockets and missiles capable of striking virtually anywhere in Israel.
Hezbollah has developed into a key political force in Lebanon, holding the balance of power in the country's Cabinet.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Khatib first made connection with Hezbollah in 2007 in a series of meetings in Denmark, Morocco and Lebanon, and he conducted a second series of meetings in Turkey and Denmark in 2009 and 2010.
A lawyer for Khatib did not reply to a request for comment.
In recent years, Israel has arrested several other Arab citizens on suspicion of aiding the group.
Azmi Bishara, a former Arab lawmaker, fled Israel in 2007 a few weeks before Israeli prosecutors accused him of supplying intelligence to the Lebanese militants. A 24-year-old woman was jailed the same year for making contact with Hezbollah agents she met while studying in Amman, Jordan.
In 2008, a top Hezbollah commander was killed in a bomb attack in Syria widely attributed to Israel. The following year, Israel indicted a 23-year-old Arab citizen on suspicion of passing information on Israel's army chief of staff ? an alleged assassination plot in retaliation for the killing of the Hezbollah commander.
Early last year, Amir Makhoul, a prominent Arab-Israeli activist, was sentenced to nine years in prison after confessing to spying for Hezbollah.
Israel has also blamed Hezbollah and its sponsor, Iran, for a July bus bombing in Bulgaria that killed five Israeli tourists, as well as earlier bombing attempts on Israelis in India, Thailand, Georgia and Kenya.
Lebanon has also arrested a string of suspects it accuses of spying for Israel.

Onset of flu season raises concerns about human-to-pet transmission
ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? As flu season approaches, people who get sick may not realize they can pass the flu not only to other humans, but possibly to other animals, including pets such as cats, dogs and ferrets.
This concept, called "reverse zoonosis," is still poorly understood but has raised concern among some scientists and veterinarians, who want to raise awareness and prevent further flu transmission to pets. About 80-100 million households in the United States have a cat or dog.
It's well known that new strains of influenza can evolve from animal populations such as pigs and birds and ultimately move into human populations, including the most recent influenza pandemic strain, H1N1. It's less appreciated, experts say, that humans appear to have passed the H1N1 flu to cats and other animals, some of which have died of respiratory illness.
There are only a handful of known cases of this phenomenon and the public health implications of reverse zoonosis of flu remain to be determined. But as a concern for veterinarians, it has raised troubling questions and so far, few answers.
Veterinary researchers at Oregon State University and Iowa State University are working to find more cases of this type of disease transmission and better understand any risks they pose to people and pets.
"We worry a lot about zoonoses, the transmission of diseases from animals to people," said Christiane Loehr, an associate professor in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. "But most people don't realize that humans can also pass diseases to animals, and this raises questions and concerns about mutations, new viral forms and evolving diseases that may potentially be zoonotic. And, of course, there is concern about the health of the animals."
The researchers are surveying flu transmission to household cat and dog populations, and suggest that people with influenza-like illness distance themselves from their pets. If a pet experiences respiratory disease or other illness following household exposure to someone with the influenza-like illness, the scientists encourage them to take the pet to a veterinarian for testing and treatment.
The first recorded, probable case of fatal human-to-cat transmission of the pandemic H1N1 flu virus occurred in Oregon in 2009, Loehr said. Details were published in Veterinary Pathology, a professional journal. In that instance, a pet owner became severely ill with the flu and had to be hospitalized. While she was still in the hospital, her cat -- an indoor cat with no exposure to other sick people, homes or wildlife -- also died of pneumonia caused by an H1N1 infection.
Since then, researchers have identified a total of 13 cats and one dog with pandemic H1N1 infection in 2011 and 2012 that appeared to have come from humans. Pet ferrets have also been shown to be infected, and some died. All of the animals' symptoms were similar to that of humans -- they rapidly develop severe respiratory disease, stop eating and some die. Serological studies suggest there is far more exposure to flu virus in cats and dogs than previously known.
"It's reasonable to assume there are many more cases of this than we know about, and we want to learn more," Loehr said. "Any time you have infection of a virus into a new species, it's a concern, a black box of uncertainty. We don't know for sure what the implications might be, but we do think this deserves more attention."
Natural and experimental transmission of the H3N2 influenza virus from dogs to cats in South Korea showed the potential for flu viruses to be transmitted among various animal species, Loehr said. It's unknown if an infected cat or other pet could pass influenza back to humans.
The primary concern in "reverse zoonosis," as in evolving flu viruses in more traditional hosts such as birds and swine, is that in any new movement of a virus from one species to another, the virus might mutate into a more virulent, harmful or easily transmissible form.
"All viruses can mutate, but the influenza virus raises special concern because it can change whole segments of its viral sequence fairly easily," Loehr said. "In terms of hosts and mutations, who's to say that the cat couldn't be the new pig? We'd just like to know more about this."
Veterinarians who encounter possible cases of this phenomenon can obtain more information from Loehr or Jessie Trujillo at Iowa State University. They are doing ongoing research to predict, prevent or curtail emergent events.

Last year at CEATEC, we saw NTT DoCoMo demo its translation app, which made life easier by translating a Japanese menu into English text. This time around the carrier is showing off the new Hanashite Hon'yaku service for Android devices, which can translate spoken Japanese to English and vice versa (it supports a total of 10 languages, including French, German and Korean). In addition to providing an on-screen translation, the system reads out your speaking partner's words in your language.To use the service, you need an Android-enabled (2.2 and higher) device running on either the carrier's spumode or moperaU plan. Provided you fit those requirements, you'll simply have to dial the other party, speak into the phone and wait for it to play back your words in a foreign tongue.
Of course, you can also use the service in person, which is exactly what we did at DoCoMo's booth. When we gave it a test run with some simple questions ("Where are you from?", "What time is it?"), the app had no trouble spitting back those phrases in Japanese so the DoCoMo rep could respond. When he answered in Japanese, the translation to English was equally seamless, taking just a second or two to communicate that he is from Japan. Though the app is free, you'll have to pay call and data charges (using the service for face-to-face conversation only entails a data fee). The cross-cultural barriers will break down starting November 1st, but you can get a glimpse of the service in action just after the break.

Gays and lesbians can be fired in 29 states based simply on who they love and not the quality of their work. On that score, the number of states sanctioning discrimination is even worse for transgender people. Stable, law abiding same-sex couples in 32 states are forbidden from jointly adopting children and denied the right to adopt the sons and daughters of their partner in an equally unfortunate number of states. Students who identify as, or are perceived to be LGBT remain vulnerable to state-sanctioned discrimination by their teachers and public schools in 36 states while 33 members of our ?more perfect union? have no statewide programs protecting them from bullying. When it comes to renting a home, lesbians and gay men can be denied a lease simply for being gay in 29 states and again, the numbers are even worse for the transgender community. While hospitals accepting Medicare and Medicaid are currently barred from denying visitation to same-sex partners as a result of a mandate issued by President Obama, 26 states have no laws guaranteeing such simple human dignity should the edict be rescinded by a future President.
It has been 15 years since Ellen Degeneres came out on national television and while our culture has moved miles towards LGBT acceptance and inclusion, our laws have moved mere inches.
The presidential debates between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will largely focus on the continuing economic anxiety of everyday Americans. To that end, debate moderators should consider how such economic worries are intensified for the nearly 10 million Americans who are confronted by these and countless other forms of government endorsed bigotry.
We know President Obama?s record on LGBT equality thus far. To highlight only a few of his most notable accomplishments, he signed the hate crimes bill into law, repealed ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell,? appointed a record number of openly LGBT people to his administration, and came out in support of marriage equality. But what can we expect from his second term? Does he remain committed to the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would forbid employers from firing someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity? If so, how can he expect to see such legislation reach his desk with anti-gay zealots controlling the House of Representatives and a GOP Senate minority hooked on the filibuster? Will he skip Congress and sign an Executive Order barring government contractors from discrimination?
In 1994, Romney famously told a New England newspaper, "I am more convinced than ever before that as we seek to establish full equality for America's gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent." His ?opponent? was Ted Kennedy, a champion for LGBT equality. Since then, Romney has dropped his attempts to one-up Kennedy on the rights of LGBT people by opposing ENDA and calling such employment protections a ?burden? on business. Furthermore, his opposition to same-sex relationship recognition is even more extreme than George W. Bush?s notorious effort to pass a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality. At least Bush supported civil unions for same-sex couples. Romney supports the constitutional amendment Bush championed, opposes civil unions, and would allow states to ban even basic domestic partnership agreements. He claims that LGBT individuals should be shown respect but how would he show such deference as President if he believes it is okay for these citizens to be fired because of who they are and that their relationships are inferior to those of their straight friends, family, and neighbors?
These are only a few of the specific questions that moderators should ask Romney and Obama during debates regarding our economic future and they should require the same specificity from the candidates in their answers.
Regardless of what happens in the race for the White House, there are signs that this election could very well be a watershed moment for LGBT equality across the country.
In 2012 at least eight states -- Delaware, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, South Dakota, and West Virginia -- are poised for removal from the list of states without openly LGBT state legislators. A significant step when you consider the fact that no state has passed protections for LGBT residents without having an openly LGBT state lawmaker.
The same holds true for Congress. In November, we could elect the nation?s first openly LGBT U.S. Senator in Wisconsin?s Tammy Baldwin and could see the delegation of openly LGBT Congresspersons increase from its current membership of four to seven including a lone Republican and two firsts: a bisexual and a person of color.
At the ballot box, voters in Maine, Maryland, and Washington will likely approve marriage equality initiatives becoming the first states to do so at the polls while Minnesota could very well defeat efforts to add a ban on same-sex unions to the state constitution.
With so much at stake for LGBT people and numerous historic electoral wins on the horizon this fall, shouldn?t President Obama and Mitt Romney have a frank discussion about issues important to LGBT Americans and their families?
Gay folks aren?t all that different from anyone else. We worry about our families, our jobs, our friends, and the future of our country too. We might even worry just a little bit more.

Former Bethlehem Catholic quarterback Adam Bednarik will resume his football career with the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks professional indoor team.
At a Wednesday ceremony at the Comfort Suites across from Dorney?Park?to announce the 2013 schedule, Bednarik said he's excited to?get back in uniform.
"I'm excited; it's an opportunity I couldn't pass up," said Bednarik, the former Golden Hawks and?West Virginia?University standout. "I had some unlucky injury things happen to me in college, which set me back, especially with my shoulder. I didn't get to where I wanted, necessarily, professionally because of my shoulder.
"After college, I played one year of pro arena ball in Albany, and I have been back here ever since. Once I saw that they began the Steelhawks, I started to get the itch to play again. What better opportunity than to be back home, play professional football for a great organization and be able to do it front of family and friends again, just like back in high school."
Bednarik, who works in the special education department of the Bethlehem Area School District,?graduated from Becahi in 2003 and from West Virginia in 2008.
He is currently the quarterbacks coach for Freedom.
"I wouldn't say I am in the best shape, but by the time the season rolls around, I will be," Bednarik said. "In practice, being around the the kids, sometimes I still feel like I am one of them. I love to throw the football around and some of the kids told?me that I should go back out and play again. They tell me I still got it. It's been gnawing me a little bit, so I thought 'Why not?' Like I said, it will be fun to?play again here in the Valley where it all started for me."
The?Steelhawks, who will be starting their third season at Stabler Arena (March 17 is the first game) and their first as members of the Professional Indoor Football League, are looking to strengthen local ties.
Former?Central Catholic and?Lehigh standout Matt Cohen has been added to the Steelhawks coaching?staff as an assistant. Cohen is presently an assistant at Bethlehem Catholic.
"A lot of exciting stuff is going on and we're making makes steps to move forward," said Steelhawks coach and assistant GM Chris Thompson. "Adam is one heck of a quarterback. I know he played 17 games in Arena Football 2 with the Albany Firebirds and he's got a lot of experience with the indoor game. That's one of the reasons we brought him in here, plus he's got those local ties, which are also so important to us. We want our fans to be able to relate to local people. We're excited to have him."
